Who: ALIX - GROUND
SUPER GROOVY FEMALE FRONTED STONER ROCK
Bologna-based Alix have been making a name for themselves as ambassadors of the heavyweight desert groove in their native Italy for close to a decade now, but hopefully 'Ground' - their English language debut - will see them make waves further afield.

Setting blues, tripped out drones, and Sabbath dirges against the impassioned vocals of singer Alice Albetazzi, 'Ground' heaves with the kind of down 'n' doomy spirit you had hoped the Auf Der Maur album would have. The fuzzed-out sprawl of 'Fun' hurtles its way towards a psychedelic burnout, while the turbo charged throb of the title track sounds like Soundgarden caught in a distortion hurricane with PJ Harvey. Excellent.

DON’T YOU BREAK DON’T GO WRECK DOWN
SPIRIT PURE AS A LAMB
DON’T YOU LAY COME BRINGING YOUR LOVE
DON’T YOU LAY COME BRINGING YOUR LOVE

SPIRIT RISE WHILE IT RAINS DOWN

DON’T YOU LAY COME BRINGING YOUR LOVE

Lyrics to "Out Of The Sighs":
OUT OF THE SIGHS

OUT OF THE SIGHS / A LITTLE COMES
SOME RELIEF THAT I FELT THROUGH THE NIGHT
FACING REALITY MY CONSCIENCE GROWS
AND MOVES IN TIME

LET MY WAY SHINE ON / SO GOOD
AND NO DECAY
LET THE WAY I’M SHINING / DON’T TURM ME AROUND
DON’T LEAVE MY HANDS

HE SAID YOU AIN’T GOT TO CHANGE IT

Lyrics to "Ground":
GROUND

FROM THE GROUND
THEN THROUGH THE GRASS
YOU GO ON SLIDING
RIGHT IN MY HANDS

AND WHEN YOU MOVE
YOU MOVE AROUND
YOU CHANGE THE COLOURS
OF THE GROUND
... OF THE GROUND

FROM THE GROUND
YOU LIGHT THE DREAMS
WHEN THE DREAMS COME... BABY
YOU’LL BE WHAT YOU FEEL

AND WHEN YOU MOVE
YOU MOVE AROUND
YOU CHANGE THE COLOURS
OF THE GROUND
... OF THE GROUND

LAY... YOUR BODY DOWN
ON.. THE LAND OF DREAMS
OH... DREAMLAND

Lyrics to "I’ ll Be Gone":
I’ LL BE GONE

WHILE... YOU ARE GOING
TO LET ME OUT... OF YOUR HEAD
AND WHILE.. YOU ARE GOING
DRINK WITH ME ... TO MY HEALTH
AND WHILE.. WHILE... WHILE..
THE OCEAN.. SO DEEP AND WIDE
FROM BLUE TURNS TO GREY
I’LL BE GONE
WINTER’S THE ONE TO BLAME

BLUE TURNS TO GREY.. I’LL BE GONE

WHILE... YOU ARE GOING
REMEMBER.. WHAT WE HAVE DONE
AND WHILE... YOU ARE GOING
WE SHOULD NOT.. BE APART
AND WHILE.. WHILE... WHILE..
THE OCEAN.. SO DEEP AND WIDE
FROM BLUE TURNS TO GREY
I’LL BE GONE
WINTER’S THE ONE TO BLAME

Lyrics to "Like A Flood":
LIKE A FLOOD

ONLY.. ONLY MUD
BLUE FLASHES FREE
HOLDING THE DREAMS
AND I DON’T EXIST
EMPTY STREETS
COVER MY THOUGHTS
AND ONLY MUD
IN BLUE FLASHES

LIKE A FLOOD
CARRY ME HOME

AND WHAT ABOUT
THE NIGHT WE SANG
WE SANG ABOUT THE.. SITUATION
AROUND MY HEAD
IN ENDLESS CIRCLES
DEEP AS THE OCEAN
THE REVELATION

NINEHERTZ REVIEW:

There are two things at first glance that make Alix stand out from the stoner rock pack. First is their nationality. With the notable exception of El-Thule, who are beginning to make a name for themselves, Italy isn’t exactly known as a veritable hotbed of stoner rock talent. The second concerns the gender of the vocalist – females are few and far between in this occupation, in this genre.

The latter of Alix’s distinctions, however, is of huge importance to the make up of ‘Ground’. Alice Albertazzi’s voice inevitably stands out, and there’s no denying the beauty that it adds to the music. Her range is also fantastic – from the mellow almost-whisper of ‘Love’, to the open-lunged belted-out ‘Like A Flood’ – it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to compare her favourably with P.J. Harvey.

Yet all this would be for nought if the music were not up to scratch. Thankfully, this is not the case, and it perfectly suits Albertazzi’s style and quality. The aforementioned self-styled ‘desert rock’ description becomes clear now. Influences on the Alix sound seem certain to centre around the Homme/Goss school of stoner rock – the self-titled debut Queens of the Stone Age album being the most obvious point of reference.

‘Ground’ is consistently strong across its nine tracks, and on occasion raises the bar even higher. ‘I’ll Be Gone’ comes across like an outtake from Masters of Reality’s Welcome to the Western Lodge album – complete with Albertazzi’s range stretched even further to the point where she almost mimics Chris Goss’ tone – before blooming into a truly beautiful acoustic chorus.

Album closer ‘Love’ harks back to a 60’s psychedelica sound, complete with trippy lyrics to match – something, actually, that is common throughout the album: “From the ground, then through the grass, you go sliding right in my hands, and when you move, you move around, you change the colours of the ground”, from the title track, being a good example.

It could be argued that Alix, at times, owe a little too much to their influences, even taking into account the almost unique angle brought to the mix by Albertazzi. Yet it would be a heartless soul to deny that ‘Ground’ is a truly joyful, occasionally superb, surprising experience.

Guy's Music Review Site:

I hadn’t even heard of Alix before they stepped on the stage, except for the fact that they are a female-fronted stoner band, but with their short 9-song set they proved that they do deserve a wider audience. Because I got my hands on their latest album only after the show, I’m not exactly sure which songs they delivered, but it pretty much seemed to follow the order of Ground, as the two opening songs from that album – “Out of the Sighs” and the title track kicked off the gig on a groovy note: while guitar player Pippo de Palma squeezed a warm, fuzzy desert sound out of his guitar, bass player Franco Romanelli started dancing all over the place and bangin’ his head to the straightforward bashing of drummer Andrea Insulla. While they’re obviously inspired by the classic stoner sound – led-heavy bass lines, crashing cymbals and a fat guitar tone that hovers between crushing chords and psychedelic leads – they sounded more accessible than most of their stoner brethren out there, occasionally with a merciless groove ("Ground") that recalled Unida’s booty-shakin’ blend of desert rock and in-your-face hard rock. Of course, it wouldn’t be as special if it weren’t for singer Alice, whose unique voice, which switched from a deeply sensual whisper to nearly ecstatic shrieks - is something different, to say the least. Think of a merger of Siouxsie (but more vibrato), Shirley Manson (not as girlish) and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O. (but less hysteric) during songs like “Like a Flood” and “Take My Hands” which are basically based on one or two soulful, recurring patterns. Sometimes the barrage of caterwauling became something of an acquired taste - especially during the songs that seemed to explore the territory between straightforward stoner and stuff you might call “alt rock” (“I’ll be Gone,” “Fun”) – but it worked excellent during the songs that would have you move your head unconsciously, like the opening tracks, the funky “Take My Hands” and the final song, during which the bass player switched to electric slide guitar and led the band through a particularly pleasing romp that was well-received by the audience.

ALIX
"Ground"
Ground features only the finest, hand-crafted, vintage sounding stoner rock available, imported all the way from Italy. I know that I tend to compare every band with a chick singer to HEART, but that's only because I'm from the 70's and Heart was the best chick band alive at the time, and I had a hard-on for them for sure. Anyways, my roommate, who wasn't even a fetus back then, said that Alix sounded "so 70's" when he heard them playing on my i-Tunes, which confirmed what I thought all along: Alix sounds kinda like Heart. Only heavier and riffier, and better than ever

PLACE OF SKULLS & ALIX

OCTOBER 13t 2004 at the Bastard Club, Osnabrück, GER

I can't describe with words how great my enthusiasm has been, as I finally received the dates for this tour. Yes, it was like a dream come true!!! My expectations were lowered as I noticed that PLACE OF SKULLS have lost their drummer, but with Minnesota Pete (Sixty Watt Shaman/The Mighty Nimbus) Victor Griffin had found a very talented and ambitious man, and all problems have been washed away. First off, I like to say THANK YOU to Daniel because without this man we never had reached the Bastard Club in Osnabrück. So we drove about two hours (Daniel, bro Opolus and me) and we felt like a bunch of children waiting for Santa Claus. The Bastard Club is a very curious location inside a huge skatepark, but all in all it was a nice place , and when we arrived ALIX were still doing their soundcheck. It was a pleasure to meet this band again, after their convincing support for The Hidden Hand earlier this year. And now they have the opportunity to support PLACE OF SKULLS for their first European tour. This must be more than a good year for ALIX. After a short talk with the band and the first visit at the bar, I finally met Victor and this was the second pleasure at this evening. He was a bit tired, because both bands have had a day off, and I was so glad that we met. We had a good talk about several personal themes, and I promise that I will visit you asap. After some more beers ALIX entered the stage. First off, I was really shocked. No, not because of ALIX but about the amount of people at this show. Only about 20 people have found their way to this gig!!!!!!! A big fuck-off goes out to all couch-potatoes and lazy asses. Once again, ALIX where playing an excellent tight show that mostly contains songs from the actual album "Ground". Their groove-laden heavy psychedelic rock is something special for me, especially because of Alicia's intense and emotional vocals. And when bassplayer Franco is playing dobro, and the band is entering the territory of Delta-Blues, the entire sound became more tasteful and original. This time, ALIX came up with a second song in that vein, which was absolutely new for me. Excellent stuff, and I hope this band will record more material like this. After nearly 50 minutes the band finished the show, again with the long bluesy groove-killer they played also in Dortmund some months ago. Although there were only very less people in the club, the band played an energetic set, not as intense as in Dortmund, but especially bass-player Franco and vocalist Alicia were responsible for some solid stage-action. Great band - great show!

And then the time has come for PLACE OF SKULLS. Victor, Dennis and Minnesota Pete went on stage and kicked off with "Last Hit", the perfect opener for this show. I can't describe with words how thick and massive Victor's significant guitar-sound is on stage. Awesome!!!!!!! Although I've seen a lot of heavy bands in my life, this kind of soulful heaviness was something new and exciting for me, because it was so authentic and real. After the first power-chords it was crystal clear that this evening will be something very special. The next track was "Dead", one of my faves from the debut album "Nailed". My jaws stood wide open, I had shivers down my spine and I couldn't believe what I was hearing and seeing. Victor's presence is dominating the stage, he's a charismatic player and an emotional vocalist. And bassist Dennis Cornelius (ex-Revelation/ex-Oversoul) played as he belonged to this gang since the first demo recordings. Ok, it was no real surprise that he's a skillful player, because he had done a lot of shows with PLACE OF SKULLS in the USA and he was part of Revelation during their best period. Skinsman Minnesota Pete was the joker in the pack. A very few days before this tour started, he teamed up with Victor and Dennis, what means that he had only a short period to learn the material. Well, he did that perfectly and added his own powerful style to the complete sound. So he was more than just a replacement, and I hope that he will stay for a while with PLACE OF SKULLS. Ok, back to this steaming show. The band played "The Monster", "With Vision" or "Silver Chord Breaks" and a few others, all with an intensity that can only be described as overwhelming. When the band started with the old Death Row classic "Feeling Of Dread", Dennis took over the vocals. Like on the album, the song went over into the second half of "Sinister". The small crowd was enthusiastic and me and bro Opolus, too. But when the band played the classic "Relentless", all hells break loose. I felt like a small child, because I never expected to listen to this timeless Victor Griffin-song in my life. It's needless to say that PLACE OF SKULLS performed this song in a brilliant and exciting way. At least, the band presented one very new song from the upcoming album, but -shit- I forget the title. Anyway, it was a very emotional and soulful track, close to cuts like "Dead" or "Love She Gave". No filler - just another killer!!! To sum it up, this was one of the best shows I've seen in my life, and I've seen thousands of shows during the last 25 years. PLACE OF SKULLS are a class of its own, and only very few out there can mess with them. If I've had the chance to see more shows I'd have done it, but without a driving license and less money.I hope, they return to Germany as soon as possible, before splitting up. At least I like to greet Daniel (sorry for "polishing" your car windows!), Opolus and of course ALIX and PLACE OF SKULLS, especially Victor. Hope we meet again! Thanks a lot for this unforgetable evening!!!!

Probably the most touring band from Italy and probably the best female voice in the whole Stoner scene...this is Alix. The sound of Alix could be described as a mixture of Scandinavian Stoner-Rock and Psychedelic, but as I said the voice Alice is one of the best female voices I´ve heard in the Stoner scene. Ground is a hell debut album and covers every Stoners needs for sure. I mean...I listened to Ground a couple of times now and I find something new every time and the voice of Alice enchants me every time. Highly recommended.
